The 86 List\u00c2\u00a0celebrates their 11-year anniversary with the release of their fifth full-length album, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Respect.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 The night is sure to be a blast with a rare set by The Hell Caminos, the up and coming False Crack, and one of Honolulu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rare gems, SMITZ and Pimpbot. The show kicks of at 9pm at Anna Banana\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s August 20th.\u00c2\u00a0 5 dollars, 21 and up. \u00c2\u00a0There will also be a second show at the historic all ages venue,\u00c2\u00a0Coffee Talk\u00c2\u00a0with Golfcart Rebellion, No Image and more ($5, 8pm Aug 27)<\/p>\n
Forming in 1999, 86 List played their first show in 2000, while Josh86 and Derek86 were still in highschool. “86 list” refers to a list in a coffee shop where Josh86 worked on the North Shore while he was in high school. It was a list of things missing from the shop\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s inventory, and alludes to the 86 List’s songs’ lyrical content, which concerns things that are missing or should be missing from society. For the last decade the band has been a committed to the raw politic-ism that can be found in the bands that have most influenced them, such as\u00c2\u00a0The Clash,\u00c2\u00a0Bad Religion, and\u00c2\u00a0Operation Ivy. The band has focused on rare subjects not typically covered by Hawaii bands including issues surrounding The Asian Development Bank, police brutality,\u00c2\u00a0overpopulation, and teenage pregnancy to name a few. Disaster, the bands first cd, was released in 2001. It has been followed by Our Neighborhood (2003), Tattoo (2004), and 86 (2007).\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Respect\u00e2\u20ac\u009d continues the thematic with songs that nod to First Lieutenant Watada, Civil Unions, and the ubiquitous subject of unity.\u00c2\u00a0 However, their lyrics on this record also reflect a maturity and consciousness of a band that has grown older in an ever changing music scene. “Respect” also reflects on the sometimes bittersweet nature of friendship. At one point Josh86 exclaims, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cause I got more bad memories with friends than with my enemies, A fact I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m looking to replace with memories that I can embrace.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
Over the years The 86 List can be credited with some of Honolulu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most memorable musical moments. Otto and the band have put on multiple productions of\u00c2\u00a0Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Josh86 has worked tirelessly as a promoter and front man of both The 86 List his other band Black Square to support the\u00c2\u00a0live music\u00c2\u00a0scene.<\/p>\n
